174 - The Thames from Richmond Hill | |
An unfinished watercolour study of the same view, dating from about 1795, is in the Turner Bequest, XXVII-K. Compare also the later compositions related to the 1825 and England and Wales designs (Nos.256-7 and 434). As Turner lived in the neighbourhood of Richmond he made many drawings of the famous view; numerous studies in the sketchbooks may or may not relate directly to particular watercolours. It is possible that the pencil study on f.76r of the ‘Hastings to Margate' sketchbook of c.1815 (T.B.CXI) was used for this watercolour.
