6. Synthesis 1814-19
186 - Leeds

The view of the town is taken directly from a pencil drawing of the whole panorama in the Devonshire Rivers' sketchbook No.3, T.B.CXXXIV, ff.79v and 80v (continued on f.38r). On f.38v is a rough sketch of the view with some foreground incident; ff.45r and 37v have smaller compositions for the whole design. It has been supposed that the drawing was made specifically for Whitaker's Loidis and Elmete for which Turner produced other designs, etched or engraved c.1816 (Rawlinson Nos.83-87) but the only known print of the subject, the lithograph by J. D. Harding (No.B105), does not in fact seem to have been used for that purpose.
