196 - From Rheinfels, looking over St. Goar to Katz

One of the fifty-one Rhine views made in the autumn of 1817 and bought by Walter Fawkes (see No.195). The subject is based on two pencil studies in the 'Rhine' sketchbook (T.B.CLXI, No.201): one on ff.22v and 23r is taken from beneath the castle of Rheinfels, at river level; the other, on f.42r, shows the view from the castle itself, though from a viewpoint slightly further to the right than that of the watercolour.
