6. Synthesis 1814-19
200 - ‘Waterloo and Rhine’ sketchbook - Johannisberg, Edrich, Elfelt, etc: six panoramas on the Rhine

This book was used during August 1817 at Bruges, Ghent, Brussels, Waterloo and along the Rhine. The series of tiny sketches noting the successive panoramas of the Rhine as Turner travelled up it provided much of the material from which the famous fifty Rhine views for Walter Fawkes were created (see No.195). The watercolour of ‘Johannisberg' is now in the British Museum (1958-7-12-418).
