Based on a pencil sketch of Roslin Castle in the "Scotch Antiquities' sketchbook of 1818, T.B.CLXVII-66r (see No.204). Other views of Hawthornden with the Castle occur in the same book. Turner had already visited the spot during his 1801 tour of Scotland; see the 'Edinburgh' sketchbook, LVI-62, etc. (No.52).
