8. Work and Play 1820-36
241 - Shields on the River Tyne

Rawlinson No.752. The drawing, signed and dated 1823, is in the Turner Bequest, No.CCVIII-V.

Small in size but large in scale, this design recreates the classic Claudian ‘Sea-Port' composition as an industrial scene, and transforms the sun into the moon. A 'colour-beginning' in the Turner Bequest (T.B.CCLXIII-192) may be related to the subject and seems to connect it, in mood at least, with the Little Liber mezzotints (see No.252). Compare the painting 'Keelmen heaving in Coals by Night' of 1835 (No.513).
