One of the Little Liber series, Rawlinson No.805. An early trial proof; later a boat and distant view of Mount Etna were added on the left. Turner did not visit Sicily and the subject may have been derived from a sketch by another artist. Turner's drawing for the plate, similar in size and technique to that for 'Paestum (No.252), is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and is called 'A Storm over St Peter's, Rome'.
