Perhaps connected with the Ports of England series (see No.243) for which Turner made several slight colour studies similar to the upper two on this sheet. The lowest study, with its washes of pink and green, is akin to some of the 'colour-beginnings' provisionally dated c.1817, but also has similarities with ‘colour-beginnings' of c.1830, e.g. ‘Tamworth Castle' (T.B. CCLX-184).
