The largest and most splendid of Turner's watercolours relating to this subject, this drawing seems to have been executed in conjunction with a series of 'colour-beginnings' developing a theme which had appeared in some early watercolour studies (see No.174) and which he developed very fully in one direction when he painted the large England: Richmond Hill on the Prince Regent's Birthday in 1818 (No.167).
