258 - Virginia Water

Engraved by R. Wallis for The Keepsake 1830 (Rawlinson 323). Turner made several sketches of Virginia Water, nearly all including the Chinese Pavilion, in the "Kenilworth' sketchbook of c.1829-30 (T.B.CCXXXVIII; No.442). A sketch corresponding to the left half of this watercolour is on f.73r.

One of a pair of views of Virginia Water made for George IV, who, it is said, refused to pay for them; the pendant is untraced. It also was engraved for The Keepsake (Rawlinson No.322).
