Finberg's identification of Walmer Castle on f.Iv seems difficult to maintain; the bridge in the distance suggests Richmond or Kew. The remainder of the book is apparently devoted to views on the Thames both in London (ff.18-27) and higher up, e.g. Syon House, f.97. The book is difficult to date, in spite of its two watermarks; Finberg suggests c.1815-17, while admitting that some of the drawings may be later; it may well have been in use in the 1820s. ff. s"-6' show one of several such studies in the book, of wild flowers and other plants, probably seen on the Thames. Compare the studies perhaps done near Windsor in the 'Naples, Pastum and Rome' sketchbook of 1819 (No.232).
