269 - Study of Three Mackerel | |
![]() | ||
Compare No.271. In addition to this one, which he presented to the Ruskin School, Ruskin owned two other studies of mackerel by Turner, which he described in the catalogue of his own collection, shown in 1878 (Nos.106, 107), as 'Study on his kitchen dresser at Margate, splendid', and just a dash for three more. Cook impatient'. A note by Ruskin on one of the drawings says that he bought them from Mrs Booth, Turner's housekeeper at Margate. The J. E. Taylor sale, (Christie, 8 July 1912) included two drawings of mackerel, one with prawns; these are apparently identifiable with two drawings at Christie's 4 June 1974 (179, 180).
