Engraved by W.R. Smith for the Keepsake, 1829, as 'Lago Maggiore' (Rawlinson No.321). One of three Italian subjects published in the Keepsake in 1828 and 1829; the other two are 'Florence from S. Miniato (drawings now in the Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry and private collection, Scotland) and 'Lake Albano' (ex coll. J. Pierpont Morgan). The mood and technique of these watercolours are similar to those of the vignette designs for Rogers' Italy, which Turner had nearly finished when he left England for Rome in 1828 (see No.272). It is very probable that the Keepsake subjects were also done before he went abroad in that year. An image generated by an AI Machine Learning Model Property of the artist. | ||
