Another of the group of sketches discussed under No.470. In this case there are fairly close parallels with watercolours and drawings definitely done when Turner went to Italy in 1819, for instance 'Roman Campagna: Morning' and 'The Tiber' (T.B.CLXXXVII-34 and T.B.CLXXXIX-24; repr. Thomas Ashby, Turner's Vision of Rome, 1925, pls.6 and 1; the former also repr. Reynolds 1969, pl.93), but he could of course have painted similar views on both visits.
