501 - Stormy Sea with Dolphins

Most of Turner's pictures of stormy seas are, relatively speaking, without colour but this picture is vibrant with reds and oranges, perhaps the reflections of an unseen ship ablaze. It also shows the introduction of strong colour into a seascape characteristic of 'Slavers', exhibited in 1840 (see No.518).
