502 - Seascape with Storm coming on

The centrifugal composition, with the strongest contrast of light and dark in the centre, was developed in such works as 'Snow Storm: Steam-Boat off a Harbour's Mouth', exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1842 (see No.504). In fact a picture such as the present example could well have been taken into the Royal Academy and worked up on the Varnishing Days into something like the 'Snow Storm'.
