558 - Venice: the Campanile of St. Mark’s with the Pilastri Acritani, from the Porta della Carta

The bodycolour drawings of Venice on grey paper (see also Nos. 559-561) have been dated to 1833 on the ground that Turner was using bodycolour extensively at that period. There appear, however, to be connections between some of these drawings and the Rotterdam and Venice' sketchbook of 1840 (T.B.CCCXX); е.g. the bodycolour study of 'S. Stefano' , T.B.CCCXVII-32, is apparently based on a sketch on f.gI" of that book. The present drawing shows the Campanile of St. Mark's with scaffolding round it, and it has been pointed out that, while it is known that scaffolding was there in 1840, it is unlikely that the scaffolding put up in 1830 was still there in 1832-35', i.e. during Turner's 1833 visit (George, 1971, p.85, note 6). It therefore seems rather more probable that this and the other drawings like it belong to 1840. An image generated by an AI Machine Learning Model Property of the artist.
