19. Retrospect - Norham Castle 1798-1840
640 - Norham Castle

Another version of the subject is now in a private collection, U. K. It is not certain which of the two finished watercolours was that exhibited as 'Norham Castle on the Tweed, Summer's Morn' with a quotation from Thompson's Seasons at the R.A. 1798 (43); Finberg (1961, p.460) says that this was the Lascelles drawing subsequently owned by Laundy Walters; but in his Liber catalogue he states that the drawing owned by Lord Lascelles was not the Walters drawing but the Thwaites drawing, catalogued here. The subject is based on a pencil drawing in the 'North of England' sketchbook, f.57r, and this watercolour may have been executed after the two large-scale colour studies,T.B. L-B and c (see No.639).
