19. Retrospect - Norham Castle 1798-1840
644 - Norham Castle

The range of heavy colours employed in this 'colourbeginning' suggests a date similar to that of the 'colourbeginnings' of Tivoli, T.B.CXCVI-U and CXCVII-A

(Nos. 183 and 182). The design seems to represent a halfway stage between the early watercolours (Nos.639 and 640) and the Rivers of England design of about 1822, which was also to draw on the composition of the Liber Studiorum plate of the subject (No.643). Compare this study with the later version, T.B.CCL XIII-72 (No.649).

There is a watercolour of a lake among low hills on the verso.
