19. Retrospect - Norham Castle 1798-1840
647 - Norham Castle

Rawlinson No.317. It is not known for what purpose this plate was engraved. Turner's drawing for the Rivers of England series (No.645) was evidently the original for it; and Rawlinson records a tradition that it was intended for the Literary Souvenir, an illustrated annual for which five other of Turner's designs were used, including the large 'Richmond Hill' watercolour (No.257; Rawlinson No.314).
