This is one of the group of unfinished oils based on a plate in the Liber Studiorum, R. 57 (see Nos.620-23) and like these can be roughly, and tentatively, dated c.1835-40. It could however be still later and marks the extreme of Turner's development from the topographical watercolour of c.1798 (No.640).
