During Triennial Bruges 2021: TraumA, in addition to the installations in the city centre of Bruges, a group exhibition will also be organised to further explore the ambivalent theme: between dream and nightmare, under the skin or underground, from analogue to digital alienation. A selection of around 40 sculptures, photographs, drawings, paintings and videos link the ‘unnerving’ nature of the rooms within the Burghers’ Lodge with dissonant voices, story lines and wondrous worlds. The artists portray their view of the world, mankind and architecture, which sometimes appears to be fragmented or distorted, but at other times also idyllic or heavenly. Triennial Bruges 2021: TraumA proposes a microscopic view of the environment and its residents, an under-the-skin analysis and an interweaving with the hidden part of the urban fabric. The unspoken or the unnerving comes to the fore in the context of its architecture, urbanisation, gardens or parks. The exhibition The Porous City adds another dimension: the indoor spaces of a building where the work of diverse artists are divided into thematic groups. Here, Triennial Bruges extends the scope of its research from the urban outdoors to the private nature of a former home. In this environment, the research is intensified and narrowed down: in this laboratory, art forms create a dialogue, while others clash or seek conflict. From the ‘Grand Nada’ to the ‘Vanity of Vanities’, visitors are confused, from cellar to spire, by colourful ribbons, delicate flowers or strings of oil paint. Hard marble, wooden splinters and strange polyester shapes shun today’s individual and social challenges. Besides the different threats, there is naturally also room for idyll and wonder. The fact the work is local, from Belgian workshops or a private collection, makes the presentation meaningful, stirring and reassuring.

Tijdens Triënnale Brugge 2021: TraumA wordt naast de interventies in de Brugse binnenstad, ook een groepstentoonstelling ingericht die de ambivalente thematiek verder verdiept: tussen droom en nachtmerrie, in het onderhuidse of het ondergrondse, van analoge tot digitale vervreemding. Een selectie van een 40-tal sculpturen, foto’s, tekeningen, schilderijen en video’s verbinden het ‘unheimliche’ karakter van de eigenaardige ruimtes van de Poortersloge met dissonante stemmen, verhaallijnen en wonderlijke werelden. De kunstenaars verbeelden hun kijk op wereld, mens en architectuur, die soms gefragmenteerd of verwrongen, soms dichterlijk en paradijselijk blijkt te zijn. Triënnale Brugge 2021: TraumA stelt een microscopische blik voor op de omgeving en de bewoners, een subcutane analyse en een verweving met het verborgen deel van het stedelijke weefsel. Het onuitgesprokene of het onheimelijke komt naar de oppervlakte in de context van haar architectuur, urbanisatie, tuinen of parken. De tentoonstelling De poreuze stad voegt daar een dimensie aan toe: de binnenruimtes van een gebouw waar kunstwerken van diverse kunstenaars in thematische groepen werden ingedeeld. Hier verbreedt Triënnale Brugge haar onderzoeksveld van de stedelijke buitenruimte naar het besloten karakter van een voormalige privéwoning. Het onderzoek wordt in deze omgeving nog verscherpt en verengd: in dit laboratorium gaan kunstwerken in dialoog, andere schuren tegen elkaar aan of zoeken het conflict op. Van het ‘Grote Niets’ tot de ‘Ijdelheid der Ijdelheden’, van keldergat tot spitse toren, met zachte bloemen, kleurrijke lintjes of druppende olieverfslierten, brengen ze de bezoeker in de war. Ook met het harde marmer, de houten splinters of de vreemde vormen in polyester ontlopen de installaties de huidige individuele en maatschappelijke uitdagingen niet. Er zijn natuurlijk lichamelijke, nucleaire, virtuele en ecologische bedreigingen, maar er is ook idylle en verwondering. Met werk van Belgische bodem, uit ateliers of particuliere verzamelingen, wordt hier een presentatie gebracht die aanspreekt, kerft en zalft.
