The Performance Jan Hoet Never Saw

On 9 November 1996 I performed 'The Performance Jan Hoet Never Saw' during the opening of 'De Rode Poort' aka 'Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst' in Gent, Belgium. In the basement of the construction site for the new museum I closed off a space by a moveable wall of concrete blocks. The performance could only be seen through a hole in this wall. I sat on a chair naked and tied up. On the wall I had painted before a large portrait of child abducter and murderer Marc Dutroux. The power for the lights in the humid spaces was provided by a bad-smelling and noisy petrol generator.

In 2026, I created the bonsai sculpture/model The Performance Jan Hoet Never Saw to evoke the performance in Gent. Using various 3D software programmes, I recreated the setting of the performance. The visitor can push a button to ignite a miniature LED spot and hear the sound of a petrol generator.

Grey MDF, various 3D prints, acrylic paint, LED spot, microcontroller, speaker, 31cm x 26cm x 47cm.
