The first drawing to be shown by Turner at the Royal Academy, and one of two versions of the subject. Finberg (1961, p.18) suggests that this was a repeat, with modifications, of a drawing made for Thomas Hardwick in 1789, and that the marked advance it shows on the earlier version indicates the effects of his study under Thomas Malton. It was drawn for Turner's Bristol friend, Mr Narraway.
