The first drawing to be shown by Turner at the Royal Academy, and one of two versions of the subject. Finberg (1961, p.18) suggests that this was a repeat, with modifications, of a drawing made for Thomas Hardwick in 1789, and that the marked advance it shows on the earlier version indicates the effects of his study under Thomas Malton.
