A number of similar views are in the 'Bristol and Malmesbury' sketchbook of 1791 (T.B.VI) and are in pencil only; but that on f.24 is very close in mood and treatment, especially in the palette. This drawing and the next are typical of the work that Turner produced during a tour in the summer of 1791, when he visited Bristol, Bath and Malmesbury.
