017 - 'South Wales' Sketchbook - Melincourt Waterfall near Abergarnedd | |
The inside front cover and first few leaves are occupied by an itinerary, not in Turner's hand, and a list of 'Order'd Drawings' including a set of five views of Hampton Court, Herefordshire, for Viscount Malden (later Sth Earl of Essex) and two of the same building for Sir Richard Colt Hoare. Most of the drawings are careful architectural studies, at Wells, Hereford, Monmouth, Gloucester and various Wye and Welsh castles, executed in pencil with watercolour partially added in some cases. There are also some studies of water, on the coast, at the edge of rivers, and waterfalls. Turner used another sketchbook on this tour, the ‘Smaller South Wales' book, T.B.XXV, in which the subject of 'Ewenny Priory' (No.16) was noted.
