022 - 'Tweed and Lakes' Sketchbook - Hubert's Tower, Fountains Abbey | |
The sketchbook contains architectural and landscape studies in pencil, some finished or half-finished in watercolour. Apart from making a series of views in the Lake District, especially of Ullswater and Derwentwater to which he was often to turn for later subjects (see No.428), Turner concentrated principally on major ecclesiastical monuments: York, Ripon and Durham, and the ruins of Kirkstall, Melrose, Bolton and Fountains. There are also some general views of Durham, Lancaster, Richmond and other towns. This and the ‘North of England’ sketchbook (No.23) were to be among the most permanently useful of all Turner’s early sketchbooks.
