This and No.25 are connected with the painting exhibited at the R.A. in 1798 (322) (National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; rear. Rothenstein and Butlin 1964, pl.9); and with the later finished watercolour (No.423). All these designs appear to stem from the pencil drawing in the ‘North of England’ sketchbook (No.23).
