Looking south down the lake to Lodore Falls. The composition is an enlarged version of the partly coloured pencil drawing which appears on f.82 of the ‘Tweed and Lakes' sketchbook (T.B.XXXV). On the back of this sketch is a note: 'Mr Farrington', and a finished watercolour of the subject was presented 'to Joseph Farrington, Esqr., with W. Turner's Respects'. Another drawing, T.B.XXXVI-1, shows the same view, though the waterfall is omitted. Turner later used the subject for one of the England and Wales series (B.M. 1958-7-12-442).
