027 - Harewood House from the South-East | |
The ‘North of England’ sketchbook of 1797 (No.23) contains several pencil drawings made in the neighbourhood of Harewood, including one of the house in steep perspective (f.76); there is no study for the composition of this watercolour. Four views of the house were made presumably for Edward or Henry Lascelles after Turner's 1797 visit: from the north-east; from the south; from the south-east and from the south-west; also two of Harewood Castle (see No.28). Girtin drew a similar view of the house from the south-east, probably at about the same date (the drawing is also at Harewood; Girtin and Loshak, The Art of Thomas Girtin, 1954, No.434, fig.75).
