Related to the sketches in the 'Dinevor Castle' sketchbook which seems to have been used, at least in part, in 1798 (T.B.XL-37v and 38, repr. Wilkinson 1972, p.72, and 39v and 40). Many years later, in a letter to Hawksworth Fawkes of 27 December 1847, Turner referred to how he felt when in the days of my youth… I was in search of Richard Wilson', apparently on this tour of 1798 during which he seems to have done a drawing at Wilson's birthplace, Penegoes, near Machynlleth (T.B.XXXIX-1; see Finberg 1939, p.419 and Gage 1969, p.30), and this painting is again strongly Wilsonian in feeling.
