It is not clear whether this watercolour ever belonged to Beckford; it does not form part of the series of large views of Fonthill shown at the R.A. in 1800. But for its slightly larger size, it resembles the watercolour studies made in the ‘Fonthill’ sketchbook (T.B.XLVII) when Turner was staying with Beckford in 1799.
