2. Exploration 1797-1801
044 - 'Academic' Sketchbook - Carnarvaron Castle at Sunset

A series of Academy nude studies in pencil and watercolour begins from the front of the book, and from the back, landscapes in chalk, watercolour and bodycolour. The landscapes may all be Welsh subjects and have much in common stylistically with a number of the large experimental landscapes c. 1798-1800. In addition to f39v, f41v, 42t&v, 43t&v and 44v also deal with Caernarvon Castle. They display great freedom in the manipulation of a variety of media, and demonstrate Turner's rapidly increasing interest in the expressive power of watercolour and bodycolour, probably suggested to him by his experience of painting in oils (cf. No.45).
