The view is tentatively identified by Finberg as 'near Arrochar'. It is typical of the elaborate ‘Scottish Pencils' in the Turner Bequest which provided the first indication that Turner was beginning to explore the expressive possibilities of the monochrome drawing in the same way that he had already begun to experiment with watercolour and oil. The technique is, however, a development of that which Turner had learned from the pencil drawings of J. R. Cozens. There is a slight pencil sketch on the verso.
