051 - Loch Awe, with a Rainbow | |
Probably made during or after Turner's visit to Scotland of 1801; the series of Scottish Pencils' in the Turner Bequest includes a number of views of Loch Awe (T.B.LVIII-13, 14, 15, 16), though the delicacy of handling and subtle evocation of atmosphere in this watercolour is unlike any of these. The watercolour of 'Kilchern Castle' shown at the R.A. in 1802 (377) seems to have included a view of Loch Awe with a rainbow, and this drawing may have been executed in connection with that work.
