053 - 'Scotch Figures' Sketchbook - Study of Three Women, one stooping to fill a Jug at a Spring | |
Compare Turner’s use of this book with that of the ‘Swiss Figures’ sketchbook (No.55). Although he made so few detailed notes of Scottish costumes and occupations he was able to produce a large watercolour, 'Edinburgh, from Caulton-hill', for the R.A. in 1804 (373) which makes imaginative use of a number of fully-realised figures engaged in appropriate pursuits (T.B. LX-H). Three other watercolours of Scottish subjects were shown at the R.A. in 1802: 'The fall of the Clyde, Lanarkshire: Noon' (336; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, repr. Gage, 1969, pl. 16); Kilchern Castle, with the Cruchan Ben mountains, Scotland: Noon' (377; ex. Beausire collection; see No.51); and 'Edinburgh New Town, castle, &c. from the Water of Leith' (424; the drawing of this title repr. Armstrong, 1902, fp.30 is not by Turner).
