The title is Finberg's; he suggests that the drawing may alternatively show the Jungfrau from the Lauterbrunnen road. The pencil sketch on which the drawing is based is in the ‘Thun' sketchbook (T.B.LXXVI, f.66) though the view is somewhat extended laterally here. The pencil cross on the sketch may indicate that it had been chosen for treatment in this way. It may have been intended to be worked up uniformly with the other large Swiss views of this period, which were bought by Fawkes (see Nos.65, 67, 68 and 69), but no more finished version is known.
