4. Success at the Royal Academy 1801-12
110 - Crowhurst

Engraved in mezzotint by H. Dawe (etched outline by J. M. W. Turner) for the Liber Studiorum, but unpublished (R.76).

A subject presumably inspired by Turner's visit to Crowhurst for the Views of Sussex series, 1816. Although the plate bears no letters, a note in the 'Aesacus and Hesperie’ sketchbook of 1819 (T.B.CLXIX, inside cover) indicates that a Liber subject of 'Snow', which is almost certainly the 'Crowhurst', was undertaken by Dawe. Rawlinson records the possibility that Turner did some work on the mezzotint as well as providing the etched outline.
