Engraved in mezzotint by H. Dawe (etched outline by J. M. W. Turner) for part XIII of the Liber Studiorum, 1819 (R.63). The plate is known as the 'Alcove, Isleworth', and has been called ‘Pope's Villa', 'Garrick's Temple' and 'Hampton Church'; all three titles are incorrect. Turner categorised the subject as 'Epic Pastoral'. The ‘Alcove', a shooting lodge in the form of an Ionic temple, built by Robert Mylne for the second Duke of Northumberland, occurs frequently in Turner's sketchbooks as the focal point of his imaginary landscape compositions, for instance in the 'Studies for Pictures, Isleworth' sketchbook (T.B.XC, ff.3, 4, 5, 6, etc). It recurs in another Liber plate, 'Isis' (R.68). An image generated by an AI Machine Learning Model Property of the artist. | ||
