114 - Scene on the Thames with Barges and a Punt | |
From a roll sketchbook watermarked 1797 and labelled by Turner: ‘Thames from Reading to Walton'. The small building on the far bank of the river, to the right of the composition, may be the 'Alcove' at Isleworth; see No.111. The series of forty-eight drawings in this book, many of them in watercolour, has been associated with the oil sketches of the Thames in the Turner Bequest (see Nos.135-141 and 143-146), usually dated to about 1807. Finberg gives 1806-7 as the date of the sketchbook, which has close stylistic affinities with the Studies for Pictures: Isleworth's ketchbook (No.94) in use from 1804.
