118 - 'Tabley' Sketchbook No.1 - View of Tabley House | |
Mostly careful pencil drawings in Lancashire, especially around Whalley where Turner made studies for his illustrations to Whitaker's History of Whalley during his stay with Sir John Leicester at Tabley in the summer of 1808. f.8 has the study which formed the basis of 'Whalley Bridge and Abbey, Lancashire', shown at the R.A. 1811 (244) and now in the Lloyd collection. The leaf shown has been extracted from the book and folded twice. It is a worked up version of the pencil drawing on f15v-16r. The view on f.22 (now mounted separately) is in watercolour over pencil with some pen and ink and also has a coat of gum arabic over its surface.
