Engraved by W. Miller for Cadell's Scott's Poetical Works, 1834 (Rawlinson No.501), and used as the frontispiece to Vol. v, illustrating 'Sir Tristram'. The pencil drawing on which this watercolour is based is in the 'Abbotsford' sketchbook (No.450 ff.8r and 9r). The loop of the river is much less evident there; cf. the composition of the 'Crook of Lune' (Courtauld Institute Galleries; Kitson, Turner Watercolours from the Collection of Stephen Courtauld, 1974, No.6) and some of Turner's studies in the Roman Campagna (No.471), which show a similar interest in meandering rivers seen from high viewpoints. This work is also available as a Polaroid. An image generated by an AI Machine Learning Model Property of the artist. | ||
