Both this drawing and No.295 have been thought to be connected with Moxon's edition of Campbell's Poetical Works, 1837, though it is not apparently connected with any of the finished designs. The style and colour of both drawings is similar to some pages in the 'Colour Studies' sketchbook No. (No.455) which may have been for illustrations, but Turner usually worked out his vignette designs on separate sheets of paper or, as in this case, thin card.
