301 - ‘Mortlake and Pulborough’ Sketchbook - William Moffat’s House, Mortlake

The study is continued at the right on about an inch of f.I2r. A view of the river from the garden wall is on ff.12v and 13r, with sketches of the portico of Moffatt's house. Further studies of the house and garden are on ff.13v-14r and 15v-16r. The latter was used as the basis of Turner's painting Mortlake Terrace, the seat of William Moffatt, Esq., Summer's Evening', shown at the R.A. 1827 (No.310). The drawing on ff. 10v-11r became the companion, 'Early (Summer's) Morning', shown at the R.A. 1826, now in the Frick Collection.
