Finberg (I961, p.318) suggests that Turner concluded his tour to Paris of August 1829 by travelling down the Seine to Honfleur, thence to St. Malo and Guernsey. This sketchbook contains drawings made on the boat to Portsmouth from the Channel Islands with views of Tancarville, Caudebec, etc. The series of drawings of a ruined Abbey on ff.30v'-36v show Netley Abbey, near Portsmouth, and were presumably made after Turner disembarked. ff.37v-38r probably show shipping in Portsmouth harbour. The remainder of the drawings seem to have been made in the Channel Islands. An image generated by an AI Machine Learning Model Property of the artist. | ||
