10. The French Rivers 1827-35
372 - Buildings by a Lake

Turner's tour of the Rivers Meuse and Moselle between August and November 1826 is recorded in the 'Rivers Meuse and Moselle' sketchbook (T.B.CCXVI, No.365), the 'Huy and Dinant' sketchbook (T.B.CCXVII), and the "Trèves and Rhine' sketchbook (T.B.CCXVIII). These contain a running visual 'diary' of what he saw; there is also a long series of slight studies in pencil, some with pen and white heightening, on blue paper (T.B.CCXXIV) which may have been done en route or may represent an intermediate stage towards the series of small studies, more or less finished, in bodycolour on similar blue paper, which Turner must have made after his return. Their resemblance in format and technique to the Rivers of France bodycolour drawings (Nos. 383-408) suggests that they were executed at about the same time, though the fact that few are ever as specific in detail as are many of the French ones seems to indicate that Turner did not originally have such a development in mind. In fact, these drawings may have been made after the French Rivers series when Turner was thinking of a further series featuring other views. He revisited the Meuse and Moselle in 1834 with this intention (see the sketchbooks connected with that tour, Nos. 370 and 371).
