10. The French Rivers 1827-35
377 - The Lighthouse at Marseilles, from the Sea | |
![]() | ||
The lighthouse in this drawing seems to be the same as that in CCXCII -74, a subject identified by Finberg as belonging to the Meuse-Moselle-Rhine series of about 1834. The use of grey paper reinforces the view that the drawing belongs to that series, as does the vivid colour; but Turner drew the lighthouse and other buildings round the harbour in the 'Lyons to Marseilles' sketchbook used on his way to Italy in 1828 (T.B.CCXXX-52r, 53r and v) and it may be that these bodycolour studies were executed nearer to that date and to the date of the French Rivers drawings.
