This study is typical of the composition studies that Turner seems often to have made on the spot in France in addition to his more usual pencil sketches. It apparently shows the Château du Roi René at Angers. Turner made pencil studies at Angers in his 'Nantes, Angers and Saumur' sketchbook, probably of 1826 or 1827 (T.B.CCXL VIII-29v, etc) and a coloured drawing in the Loire series is T.B.CCLIX-94.
