This and Nos.385, 386 and 387 were among the Turner drawings presented to Oxford University by Ruskin in 1861; it has recently been shown that Ruskin had acquired his Loire drawings from the niece of Turner's friend Charles Stokes (see No.B142), who had bought them through Thomas Griffith in 1850 (see Luke Herrmann, 'Ruskin and Turner: A riddle resolved' in Burlington Magazine, CXII, 1970, pp. 696-9).
