Engraved by J. Horsburgh, 1832 for Picturesque Views in England and Wales, Part XIII, No.2 (Rawlinson No.258). An earlier drawing of the same view (1794) is now in America. Turner showed a view of the Gate, facing towards the viewpoint of the England and Wales drawing, at the R.A. in 1799 (336), now in the Whitworth Art Gallery; this was based on a pencil study of about 1793 (T.B.XIII-D). Horsburgh's engraving in its final form has a vivid flash of lightning striking the central chimney from the dark cloud on the left. B. G. Windus lent the watercolour to the 1833 exhibition.
